Start them young

Teaching children to surf is what we love to do most.

Our youth programs teach the love of surfing, of course, along with crucial water safety lessons, stronger swimming techniques, body awareness and control and confidence in and out of the water. Your kids will finish their surfing week, poised to tackle harder challenges and confident in their ability to do so.

A kids lesson is one coach to one child for 60 minutes. The coach carries the board, picks the waves, and stays within arm's reach the whole time. Lessons start in the white water on a soft board and move out only when the child is ready.

Parents book and sign, then watch from the sand. You don't need to be in the water. If you want to surf too, book a semi-private — you and your child share one coach — or a group, which comes with two coaches, so everyone is in the water at the same time.

Rash guard, board and sunscreen are provided.

How a kids lesson works

1 · Meet

We meet you at the beach access with the board, rash guard and sunscreen ready. We confirm the spot after booking.

2 · Gear up

Your child gets a soft board sized for them, and the coach carries it to the water.

3 · White water

The lesson starts in the white water. The coach picks every wave and stays within arm's reach.

4 · Out the back

When your child is ready — and only then — they move out to the unbroken waves.

The easiest water for kids is the low tide. The conditions page marks that window in green for each day.

Allan was so lovely with our daughter. Highly recommend.

Our grandkids 7/9/14 all learned to surf and loved it. Nosara is the perfect place to learn. 10/10

Lindsey

Just being out there was completely worth it, but catching my first real wave was surreal.

Nomia

If I can do it on my 70th birthday you can certainly do it in your 30s.

Greg from Texas

These boys are the best.

Andres

I was a little timid and scared to try but Steven made me super comfortable, it's basically just yoga in the water lol. One day and I was locked in.

I wish I had more time. Surfing at sunset is the best time. Don't forget your camera.

Questions

What age can kids take surf lessons?

Kids private lessons are for children 13 and under, one coach to one child. Older kids book a regular private or join a semi-private with a parent or sibling.

Do I need to get in the water with my child?

No — you book and sign, then watch from the beach. Your child has their coach's full attention for the whole lesson. If you want to surf too, book a semi-private — you and your child share one coach — or a group lesson, which comes with two coaches, so you're in the water at the same time.

How do you keep kids safe in the water?

Every kids lesson is one coach to one child, and the coach stays within arm's reach the whole time. The coach carries the board and picks the waves. Lessons start in the white water on a soft board and move out only when your child is ready.

How long is a kids lesson, and what does it cost?

Sixty minutes with their own coach, $100 with the 13% tax included. The board, rash guard and sunscreen are ours; your child brings a swimsuit, a towel and water.

We have two kids — how does that work?

Each child gets their own coach and their own lesson, or the family books a group — up to four people with two coaches, so everyone is in the water at the same time.

What's the best time of day for a kids lesson?

The hours around low tide — the water is at its easiest. The conditions page marks that window in green for each day, and the booking calendar shows the times.

What if the weather is bad?

If you or the coach judge the conditions unsafe, the lesson is rescheduled or refunded in full. Cancelling 48 hours or more before the start gets a full refund.
